About Quieter Hands

Seva, flowing from Naam

Quieter Hands is a grassroots, Sangat-led Sikh seva initiative. It grew from a simple conviction, that seva done in remembrance of Naam uplifts everyone it touches, the one who gives and the one who receives alike.

We are not a registered charity, and we do not ask for or accept donations. Everything is carried out by unpaid sevadars, giving their time and hands freely. The work runs along two paths that share one root in Naam.

Simran & Shabad

Simran and Shabad to still the mind and lift the spirit, a quiet place to return to often. This is the heart of Quieter Hands, because all seva flows from remembrance first. Our Simran App gathers Simran, today's Hukamnama, Nitnem and Sehaj Paath in one calm place.

Care packages, carried by hand

Care packages carried by hand to the homeless and less fortunate, across the UK and internationally, hygiene and warmth, food and drink, female and baby care, and more. This is Vand Chhako, sharing what we have, lived out plainly. We serve alongside other charities and organisations, Sikh and non-Sikh, who already care for those in need.

ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਇ॥

Ghaal khaa-ay kichh hathahu day-ay, Naanak raahu pachhaaneh say-ay

"One who works for what he earns, and gives some of it away with his own hands, O Nanak, he alone knows the true path."

Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 1245

Giving with your own hands, hathahu day-ay, is the heart of this seva. Not sending money and looking away, but carrying something real to someone who needs it, and meeting them as an equal.

What goes into a care package

Packages are put together around what people actually need, and what dignity asks for. Depending on who they're for and where they're going, they may include:

Warmth

Blankets, gloves, scarves, hats and warm layers for those sleeping rough through cold nights.

Hygiene

Everyday hygiene and toiletry essentials, the small things that protect a person's dignity.

Food & drink

Non-perishable food and drink to carry someone through the days ahead.

Female care

Sanitary and female-care products, often the hardest to come by and least talked about.

Baby & family care

Baby-care essentials for families and mothers doing their best in hard circumstances.

And more

Packages grow and change with the need, and with what the Sangat is able to give.

Where the seva reaches

Right now, this seva runs in two places, each with its own need:

How this is done

Quieter Hands is a grassroots, Sangat-led seva initiative, not a registered charity. We do not ask for or accept donations. Every package is prepared and delivered by unpaid sevadars, giving their time and hands as seva, expecting nothing back. What is given, is given as seva, start to finish.

ਹਥ ਪਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਨਾਲਿ॥

Hath paa-o kar kaam sabh, cheet niranjan naal

"With your hands and feet, do all your work, but keep your consciousness with the Immaculate Lord."

Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 1376

That single verse is where the name comes from. Busy hands, quieter mind, held at once. Hands fully in the seva of the world, mind resting in Naam. This is Chardi Kala, and it is the spirit we hope every part of Quieter Hands carries.

Why we do it

Seva is its own reward.

We ask for nothing back, because the seva itself is the gift, to the one who receives it and the one who gives it. This is what it means to serve in Chardi Kala.
